From 1 October 2026 Microsoft is applying a 5% cost-of-capital uplift to annual-term Windows Server, SQL Server, CAL and System Center subscriptions billed monthly through CSP. The charge lands at renewal rather than mid-term.
As of 1 October 2026, Microsoft has begun applying a 5% "cost of capital" uplift to annual-term server software subscriptions that are billed monthly through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) channel. The change does not alter what the licence covers or the level of support attached to it; it is a financing charge for collecting an annual commitment in twelve instalments. MetrixData 360 (7 October 2026), CSP Control Center and 365 Solutions — the latter two reporting on Microsoft's Partner Center announcement — all put the figure at a flat 5%.
The products named as examples are Windows Server, SQL Server, Client Access Licenses (CALs) and System Center. No closed product list has been published, so the deciding factor is not the product name but the shape of the subscription: an annual commitment paid in monthly instalments falls within scope.
It lands at renewal, not immediately
The uplift is not applied mid-term to subscriptions already running. It takes effect at the first renewal falling on or after 1 October 2026, which means the impact arrives in waves over roughly a year rather than all at once. A company whose renewal date is in March will see it in March. New purchases made after 1 October are subject to it straight away.
What stays outside the uplift is equally clear: subscriptions paid annually up front, month-to-month subscriptions, three-year commitments, Azure consumption services, and per-seat cloud subscriptions such as Microsoft 365, Office 365, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform. Those cloud plans took a comparable 5% uplift back on 1 April 2025; this step brings server software onto the same footing.
What it means for Turkish SMEs
A large share of companies running an in-house file server, Active Directory, or an accounting or ERP database buy their Windows Server and SQL Server licences as monthly-billed CSP subscriptions, precisely to ease cash flow. That same licence is now five percent more expensive than it is for a company paying annually up front. Five percent is not dramatic on its own, but licence costs are denominated in foreign currency, so with exchange-rate movement layered on top, the gap on a renewal invoice can look wider than the uplift itself. The real risk is that the charge appears quietly, inside a renewal nobody was tracking.
There is a second date worth noting. On 13 October 2026, Windows Server 2022 reached the end of mainstream support. As BleepingComputer reports, the product continues to receive security updates under extended support until 14 October 2031, but no new features or design changes. A licence renewal conversation is a natural moment to put the server version roadmap on the same table.
What we recommend at Kamer Bilişim
- Build your renewal calendar this week. Put the renewal dates for every Windows Server, SQL Server, CAL and System Center subscription into a single list. That list shows which month the uplift arrives; surprise invoices almost always come from an untracked renewal.
- Price out the annual up-front option. Paying annually in advance sits entirely outside the uplift. If your cash flow allows it, switching the billing term before renewal removes the 5% outright. The switch has to be planned ahead of the renewal date, not mid-term.
- Treat the renewal and the server roadmap as one decision. Windows Server 2022 now receives security updates only. Folding version upgrades, virtualisation consolidation and backup architecture into the same plan keeps you from reopening the same budget line a few months later.
