What Is the 3-2-1 Backup Rule?

The 3-2-1 rule is the gold standard of a reliable protection strategy, and as powerful as it is simple: at least three copies of the data, kept on two different media, with one copy always kept off-site.

The importance of this strategy is that it removes dependence on a single point. Even if a local fault, fire or ransomware affects the local data, access to the data is preserved thanks to the off-site copy. The cloud meets this "off-site copy" need in a geographically separate and secure way.

The Role of Backup in a Ransomware Attack

Ransomware is a threat that encrypts your data to make it inaccessible and demands payment in return. In such an attack the only real rescue is usually a clean backup.

But modern ransomware also tries to encrypt the copies it can reach. That's why off-site and immutable copies are critically important. With such a copy in place, even if the attack encrypts the local data, recovery from a clean point is possible; the business doesn't have to pay a ransom.

RTO (Recovery Time Objective) defines how quickly the system must be up and running again after an outage. RPO (Recovery Point Objective) sets the maximum amount of data loss you can accept — that is, the most recent moment you can roll back to. We set these two targets according to your business and design the protection plan accordingly.

When defining scope we assess together which of your data is how critical. We know not all data has the same priority; so we apply more frequent and stricter protection to the most critical data, while building a balanced plan for more static data.
